Dear Grieving Reader

Dear Rosina,

I have just finished your book The Endless Forest. I must admit it was with considerable trepidation I began to read the epilogue and could quickly see the direction we were headed. I had suspected such an ending was coming but I am devastated all the same. Please, I beg you, tell me you will be starting a new series along the same tenor as the Bonner series!  I have enjoyed this family so
much and your storytelling I am hoping this is not the end of this genre o writing for you.

Yours truly,
A grieving fan

Dear Deanna:

I hate to think of you grieving, but on the other hand I am glad to know that the Wilderness series means so much to you. I can tell you that the novel I'm working on is about some of the Bonner grandchildren The first novel in what I hope is a trilogy is set in Manhattan in 1883. Its tentative title is The Gilded Hour.

If you are really interested in following along as a couple of Nathaniel's and Elizabeth's grandchildren make their way, please leave a comment. I  welcome your thoughts and appreciate your support.

  1. Count me among those who would love to read this series! I was hooked on the first one from Into the Wilderness onward, and so sorry when it ended. Write more! Publish them, and I will buy them!

    1. Count me in as well. I have read and re-read The Wilderness series at least 10 times. I never tire of the story. I fall in love every time I crack open the book. Please continue with this family. I feel apart of it.

  2. I've bought of Rosina's and Sara's fiction books, in print and audio format. I would love to continue this practice, yet there are no new ones to buy.

So, dear Potential Publisher, please rectify the situation sooner than is convenient. Thank you.

  3. Yes! Oh, yes! I have loved the Bonner family. Rosina's writing focuses on the things that really touch my heart and, when the book is ended, leaves me wanting more. I want more! More spirited characters, more history, more adventure, more romance! Please, potential publisher, give me more!

  4. Please do publish this book. I am an independent bookstore owner and would proudly sell it. Rosina is a great writer who has many, many followers.

  5. Heck yes I would buy any more Bonner books. Love the different world they take me to. Bring them on! To paraphrase a well known phrase, "if you publish them, we will buy"!

  6. The Wilderness series is one of my all-time favorites, and my mom loves it, too! We would be so ecstatic to see a new trilogy!!

  7. I would love to see the Bonner families journey continue. This series was my first love. I still read it all the way through over and over again. When I got to the end of the series, I couldn't help but lose a few tears.

  8. I am an avid reader and absolutely LOVE the Wilderness series. The only thing the Wilderness series needs is MORE. Please, pleases put MORE of the Bonners out into the world. These characters are like old friends. I know that other fans feel the same way, we would love to keep up with the descendants of those heroic Bonners.

  9. I have never read the Epilogue to Endless Forest because my sister warned me that it would break my heart.
I would be buying (or ordering since we have very few bookstores left) The Gilded hour on the day it came out.

    1. Georgina Lambert, your sister is probably right, the Epilogue may well break your heart but I would not have missed it for the world. I've said this before, but will say it again….it is one of the very best, BEST "conclusions" to a story I have ever read (and I read a lot.) In fact, just thinking about it again, I may just pick it up today and read it once again. And I have not picked up a "paper" book in some time (being a Kindle owner.)

      1. That is so nice to hear. Thank you.

As a reader and a television/film viewer I really appreciate a good ending, but they are fairly rare. Six Feet Under (HBO) had a fantastic send off, for example, but I can't think of any others. The novels A Soldier of the Great War (Mark Helprin) and Jenny Crusie's Bet Me also had perfect last chapters.

  10. I'm so happy you "grieving fan" wrote this letter. I had the same reaction to the end of the series. That has only happened one other time. It's hard to shake that feeling of losing something that your mind tells you that you shouldn't be so sad, they are fictional characters. I think that speaks for how well of a writer/storyteller you are.

I hope for any future books from "Into the Wilder" series.

  11. I would be *so *excited to read another book related to the Wilderness series – I'd also love any more of your more "modern" fiction, too! I love your writing and am just so happy to hear you are working on something.

  12. I am very glad you are continuing the story of the Bonner's. They became like family to me through your great writing. I loved the Claire connection as I am a big fan of Diana Gabaldon as well, so that was fun and interesting. I will keep tuned to when your next novel will be coming out.
I am a former B'ham resident/ Seattle business owner and now living in the west of Oregon.
Thanks so much for sharing your gift of writing.

  13. I'm so glad to read this! I'm totally immersed in Queen of Swords now and have already been feeling the loss of the series knowing that I'm near the end. Yes! More please!

  14. I recently reread The Endless Forest for the second or third time just to remind myself of what happened to the Bonners, et al. This led to rereading the entire series including The Endless Forest – again. I also shed a few tears as I say goodbye for now when I read the prologue.
My daughter and I will be among your many fans who pre-order The Gilded Hour as soon as it's available.

  15. This has made my day!! I am in the middle of re reading this series again. Thank you so much. PS try to include Robbie's cave plus a flashback to Iona's story. please and thank you.

  16. "If you are really interested"…..OF COURSE I'm really interested! I sobbed when I read the final page of The Endless Forest. I do however, still have the family tree all documented and just waiting for new additions to the tree and can't wait to hear their wonderful stories as you bring the characters to life. Will be running to the stores the day The Gilded Hour is released.

  17. The Bonners are a part of my heart and I consider them family! I have read thousands of books in my life and have lamented the ending of each one. However, the Wilderness series is one that I come back to over and over and over. I, too, was mournful as the tale came to a close. I would cherish the chance to travel back to them and find out where their journey has taken them.

  18. Dear Publisher,

Please count me in as an avid reader of Sara Donati' Wilderness Series" I have all six volumes, both in Hard cover and on my Kindle. I would love to read the proposed Trilogy depict the Bonner Grandchildren.

    Kris Holtan

  19. The Wilderness Series is one of my all time favorite story's. I thought the Epilogue was one of the best conclusions well-loved story that I have ever read and I truly do not believe it will ever be matched. I would LOVE, LOVE to read about the Grandchildren of the Bonner's et al. I miss them and, believe it or not, think of them. I look forward to purchasing the GH, the books that follow.

  20. I am so happy to hear that you are extending the story! I am also amazed that any publisher needs persuading to want your books! Surely your past publishing history is enough to show them what you can do. I for one am very excited to read more about the Bonners :)

  21. I would love to read a new series of books based on the Bonner story. Your Wilderness series is one of my all time favorites – I love the settings , the characters, the story lines and your writing style. Publishers should be fighting each other off to publish new books written by you. Good Luck!

  22. Definitely am interested in reading more about the Bonners. You're such a great story teller, I'd hate to think that the story wouldn't continue.

  23. Are you kidding me? It truly is a sad day when an author like you may NOT get published. Your Wildnerness Series is among some of my favorite books. I love historical fiction but it can be difficult to find a great author like yourself who can share history in such an engaging way. I will be SO on line when you have a new book out and truly hope that the Bonner story will live on. The Endless Forest was a lovely ending to a great series but I would so enjoy a new beginning of the Bonners. Blessings to you and the gift you share with us.

  24. I would absolutely love to hear more about the Bonner family. I often wonder what they're doing and miss them as if they were part of my own family. I absolutely loved the Wilderness Series and recommend it to every person I meet! Thank you so much!

  25. I'd camp out at any store that would carry the next book by Rosina. Heck, I'd camp out at the publishing house until they say they will put out the next book!

  26. My husband just asked why I squealed like a little girl. Into The Wilderness sits on my nightstand where I re-read sections all the time. I can't believe more publishers wouldn't be all over this! I just wish I wouldn't have to wait…

  27. I would certainly pre-order the Gilded Hour. My two favorite adult fiction series are the Outlander and Wilderness novels. What is so appealing is not only do I read a saga that transcends generations with all emotions, but they are wonderful history lessons! In addition to GH, I am waiting for you to decide to rewrite the Epilogue in The Endless Forest as a full novel. We have the plot in the epilogue – it just needs to be expanded a few hundred pages. Put me on that pre-order list as well!

  28. I grieved when you had to stop writing, and I celebrate that you're writing again! Woohooo! Hard to read publishers these days, that's for sure. But I have faith in your agent. And like everyone else is saying, whether a traditional publisher picks it up or not, you have thousands of loyal readers who will be more than happy to pay you direct!

  29. As a lover of the Wilderness series I would love to see another series by you and hope you have no trouble finding a publisher. I would be among those pre-ordering "The Gilded Hour."

  30. Just starting The Endless Forest again after re-reading your series for the 5th? time…and bought all new/used copies for my 22 year old daughter in NY so she can do the same! Hope you are well Rosina!

Let me/us know how we can help you make this happen – you are one in a million – there are no other series that I re-read like this. Your characters are amazing.

    Thank you always!

    Jody Pineda

  31. I am rereading the series again and was sadden that it ended! I too would look forward to reading a new series about the Bonners.

Not only do you spin a great love story, but the detail to history is fascinating and probably one of the biggest reasons I read this series.

    Please continue on!

    Cathy

  32. I, too, was sad with the end of the Wilderness series. But I still read the whole series a second time. I would be delighted to read stories of the Bonner grandchildren. Thanks for writing more and good luck with the publishers!

  33. There are few writers that can pull together deep historical detail, rich visual landscapes, ethnic/racial sensitivity, and a phenomenal love story in one book, much less the many books that you have written. How publishers could even debate whether or not they should publish your books is beyond me.

Of course, we want to see more from you! As your other fans have stated, just tell us how we can help!

  34. Would live to read another book in that series. Am going to go back and read the whole series so I can be ready tomreadthe new one. thanks!

  35. Please publish more books based on the Bonners ,a wonderful series to be read over & over , Rosina has a great talent & an empathy with all her readers all over the world, you will be missing a great opportunity if you pass on publishing more books by this great author .

  36. I would happily preorder this book/trilogy–likely in both ebook form as well as paper. I do have the whole Wilderness series in book form, so I'd have to complete the collection, but ebooks are so convenient. Well shoot, also in audio. Need a pool? Apparently I'm funding it. ;) I still bawl like a baby when I get to the end of The Endless Forest after…well, I won't admit how many times I've read/listened to these books; I've got my money out of them, that's for sure!

  37. I am so excited to hear about your new trilogy. I feel I know the Bonner family and can't wait to read how the grandchildren are doung. Thank you so much!

    Deb :-)

  38. I usually read 3 to 4 books a week and rarely buy a new book. We have a fabulous library and at least 5 fundraising used book sales annually in our area. BUT — I do not wait to find a used copy of a Sara Donati book – I buy my own new copy immediately!!!

  39. I am almost finished with The Endless Forest. I am torn between needing to see what happens and knowing when I do, the series is over. Please continue.

  40. The Wilderness series is one of my favorites. I've kept all the books from the series, and I would gladly read anything about the Bonner family.

  41. Rossina is such a wonderful writer. I have loved ALL of her books and cannot wait to see a new one. Please, please, please do not hesitate to give her a new, mulit-book contract so we can all breathe a sigh of relief! (And buy some more of her books soon.)

    1. Suzie — I wish I could tell you that the publisher actually reads this weblog, but I'm afraid your supportive words (as much as I appreciate them) won't get where you hoped them to go.

  42. I am just finishing Endless Forest and wish it would go on and on….Please continue the series. I look forward to reading The Guilded Hour and will tell my friends as most of us here at work have read the Wilderness series.

  43. I have just finished reading the series and I too am grieving! I absolutely bawled my eyes out upon closing the book. I just wish it would go on forever, I would never tire of reading about this family who I love so much! When I closed the book I held it in my hands for a long time, turning it over and over, I just couldn't bring myself to put it down. Then I had to go online to read reviews and came across your website. I am so excited to hear you will be writing about some of the Bonner grandchildren, I can't wait till it is released! Thanks for writing such an amazing series of books =)
